Champagne Soret-Devaux is an independent wine house based in Colombé-le-Sec in the Côte des Bar, a region in the extreme south of Champagne. Since the 2000s the estate has been run by the brothers Loïc (vinification and cellar) and Romaric Soret-Devaux (vineyard management), who continue the tradition of their father Didier and grandfather Alexandre.
History and Heritage The roots of the business go back to 1900, when Hermas Saturnin Devaux began cultivation in Colombé-le-Sec. In 1946 Alexandre Devaux planted the first modern vineyards on the plot "les Fleuriottes", where the estate's oldest Chardonnay vines stand. After the founding of a local cooperative in the 1960s, the parents of the current owners began their own marketing in the 1980s. Since 2014 Loïc and Romaric have operated as independent winegrowers, combining traditional methods with modern sustainability.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate covers 8 hectares of vineyards spread over the plateaus and valleys of the Côte des Bar. The soil is dominated by Kimmeridge marl, a soil type known for the mineral characteristics and freshness it gives the wines. The vineyards are planted with the three classic Champagne grape varieties:
- Pinot Noir: 70%
- Chardonnay: 25%
- Pinot Meunier: 5%
Working Methods and Sustainability Soret-Devaux takes a biodynamic and sustainable approach and is certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne). The harvest is traditionally pressed in a wooden Coquard press from 1964, which ensures gentle extraction and a rich juice. The champagnes age for 3 to 5 years in the cellar, depending on the cuvée. The house also offers oenotourism, including the "Balade des Rochottes" in a Trak'Tour and a gîte, "Les Rochottes", for visitors.
Champagnes and Cuvées The champagnes are known for their balance, fruitiness and elegant finesse. Some notable cuvées are:
- Brut Tradition: A blend of 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier, with 30% reserve wine and 3-4 years of ageing.
- Brut Millésimé Récolte 2014: Made from 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, with aromas of speculoos, pastry and candied fruit.
- Brut Réserve: A cuvée with 25% reserve wine and five years of ageing in the cellar.
The champagnes have won several awards, including a star in the Hachette Guide 2020 and medals at the Concours Général Agricole.
