Champagne Simon Rion is a micro-estate of 2.15 hectares in Courmas (Montagne de Reims), run by Simon Rion since he took over the family business in 2007 from his father Pascal. The family has been active in winegrowing for four generations.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyards lie entirely within the territory of Courmas, on the route du Champagne, and benefit from an ideal south-west exposure. The soil is mainly clayey and sometimes loamy, which contributes to the specific characteristics of the wines. The grape varieties are Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay, with Meunier predominating.
Working Methods
Simon Rion practises sustainable viticulture and has used no herbicides since 2017. The core of the philosophy is soil work and natural ground cover. In the cellar, minimal intervention is applied: the champagnes are not filtered or cold-stabilised, are extra brut (low dosage, often around 4 g/l) and undergo a long ageing on the lees (up to 11 years for the cuvée Réserve).
Champagnes and Recognition
The estate produces approximately 17,000 bottles per year with a focus on terroir expression. Well-known cuvées are:
- Originel: A blend of the three classic varieties.
- Réserve: A complex, long ageing (more than 8 years) with a solera method.
- Blanc de Blancs: Exclusively Chardonnay.
- Éclat 2 Cépages: A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The champagnes regularly receive high ratings, including 90/100 from Gault & Millau and 16.5/20 from Le Point.
