Champagne Roger Legros is an independent récoltant-manipulant based in Prouilly (Marne), 15 km west of Reims in the heart of Champagne. The family business, which has been in the hands of the same family since 1974, produces champagnes from its own grapes in culture raisonnée (integrated pest management).
The vineyards cover approximately 9 hectares and are spread over three villages in the Massif de Saint-Thierry: Prouilly, Pévy and Trigny. The grape varieties consist of 70% Pinot Noir (the "queen variety") and 30% Chardonnay, with a mixed oceanic and continental climate.
The vinification follows the champenoise method in stainless steel tanks. White champagnes undergo malolactic fermentation and are filtered but not fined. Riddling is done mechanically with gyropalettes, and disgorgement takes place by ice freezing at -20°C to -25°C. The champagnes age on racks for 1 to 3 years.
The range includes several cuvées, including:
- Rosé Brut
- Extra-Brut
- Millésimé Brut (vintage)
- Traditionnel Brut
- Cuvée Spéciale Brut
- Traditionnel Demi-Sec (medium-sweet)
Visitors are welcome for tours of the press, the cuverie and the cellars, concluded with a tasting of five cuvées. Visits take place by appointment from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 18:00. The contact details are 32 rue Haute de Pévy, 51140 Prouilly, telephone 03 26 48 52 97 and e-mail [email protected].
