History: Champagne Rémy Massin & Fils is a family business in Ville-sur-Arce, in the heart of the Côte des Bar, with a tradition going back to 1865, when Louis-Aristide Massin planted the first vines. In 1974 Rémy Massin took the initiative to transform the business into a récoltant-manipulant, and today the household is led by the fifth generation, including Sylvère, his son Cédric, and his daughter-in-law Carole.
Vineyards: The vineyards cover 22 hectares on the sunny slopes of Ville-sur-Arce, the southernmost wine region of Champagne. The soil consists of Kimmeridgian and Portlandian limestone, rich in fossil oyster shells (Exogyra virgula), which gives the champagnes their characteristic salinity and finish. The grape varieties are 75% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Blanc, with vines that are on average 30 years old.
Working methods: The estate practises sustainable viticulture without the use of herbicides or insecticides, and relies on mechanical grazing and hand harvesting to preserve biodiversity. Vinification takes place in stainless steel cuves to preserve the pure expression of the terroir, followed by an average ageing of 30 months on the lees, and up to more than six years for specific cuvées. The blending, a family task, combines traditional knowledge with a pursuit of elegance and complexity.
Champagnes: The range includes, among others:
- Brut Tradition: An elegant Blanc de Noirs, mainly Pinot Noir, with fine bubbles and a harmonious structure.
- Blanc de Blancs L'Inattendue: A pure Chardonnay with aromas of citrus and hawthorn, aged with a percentage of the réserve perpétuelle.
- Pinot Blanc: A rare cuvée that highlights the floral and white-fruit aromas of this grape variety.
- Brut Réserve: An expressive champagne with notes of yellow fruit, citrus, butter and honey.
