Pol​‌​ Roger is an independent family business that was founded in 1849 by Pol Roger in Aÿ, but moved in 1851 to Épernay, where it is still based. The house is one of the last major champagne houses still entirely family-owned, currently under the leadership of the fifth generation.

History

• The founder died in 1899; his sons Maurice and Georges developed the house further.
• The house enjoys international renown through its friendship with Winston Churchill, who favoured the champagne from 1908.
• In 1975 the prestigious Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill was launched in honour of the tenth anniversary of the death of the British prime minister.

Vineyards

• Pol Roger manages approximately 90 to 92 hectares of its own vineyards, supplemented by purchases from regular suppliers.
• The vineyards lie in the three main sub-regions: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs.
• The grape range consists of approximately 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 100% Chardonnay (white grape), with the share of Chardonnay in the blends increasing.

Approach

• The champagnes age for a long time in deep, 7.5 km-long limestone cellars up to 33 metres underground.
• Pol Roger follows a traditional approach: the grapes are harvested by hand and the riddling (turning of bottles) is still done entirely by hand, a rare practice for a house of this size.
• Malolactic fermentation is systematic, which contributes to the round, charming texture and the persistent mousse.

Champagnes

• Brut Réserve: The basic offering, a blend of the three classic grape varieties, known for its balance and freshness.
• Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill: The prestige cuvée, produced only in exceptional vintage years, consisting of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
• Blanc de Blancs: A vintage champagne of 100% Chardonnay, known for its elegance and minerality.
• Other styles include Rosé, Pure (Extra Brut) and Rich (Demi-Sec).
