Champagne Philippe Dechelle is an independent family business based in Brasles on the southern slopes of the Vallée de la Marne, specialising in high-quality grower champagne. Production takes place entirely on the estate, with the winegrowers using their artisanal know-how to emphasise the unique expression of their terroir.
History
The history of the estate goes back to 1902, when an ancestor, a master vine-grafter, contributed to the rebuilding of the vineyards after the phylloxera crisis. Philippe Dechelle settled on family plots in 1982 and in 1987, together with his brother, left the cooperative to become independent. Today the third generation, led by Clara, is giving the estate a new impetus, combining tradition with a modern vision.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate has approximately 9 to 11 hectares of vineyards, mainly located in Brasles, with a clay-limestone soil that is typical of the Marne Valley. The grape varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are grown in equal proportions. The winegrowers work according to High Environmental Value (HVE) certification, with a focus on respect for nature, biodiversity and the preservation of soil balance.
Approach
All vinification operations take place on the estate, from harvest to bottling. The champagnes are kept on the lees for at least 3 years, with some cuvées resting for even 5 years for extra complexity. The philosophy is geared towards low dosages, often Extra Brut or Brut Nature, to preserve the pure expression of the terroir. Customers can visit the estate for tours and tastings by appointment, learning more about the production process.
Champagnes
The range includes several cuvées, all priced for accessibility without sacrificing quality:
- Cuvée Nude: A concept of transparency and purity, made from the 2015 harvest, with an Extra Brut dosage and 5 years of ageing on the lees.
- Cuvée Terrienne: An expressive Extra Brut champagne that emphasises the nature of the terroir.
- Blanc de Meuniers: Made from Pinot Meunier (2018 harvest), known for its fruity and soft character.
- Blanc de Blancs: A champagne made from Chardonnay, with a Brut dosage, which combines freshness and elegance.
