Perrier-Jouët is a prestigious champagne house, founded in 1811 by the couple Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët in Épernay, and has been owned by the Pernod-Ricard group since 2005. The house is known for its floral and elegant style, with Chardonnay as the signature grape, a choice the founders made when this grape was still little used.
History and Heritage
- The house was already exporting to the United Kingdom in 1815 and in 1861 became supplier to the British royal family (Queen Victoria) and the French imperial court.
- The iconic Belle Époque cuvée was launched in 1964, based on the Art Nouveau bottle design by Émile Gallé from 1902, with Japanese anemones as its emblem.
- In 2020 Séverine Frerson was appointed chef de cave, the first woman in this role in the history of the house.
Vineyards and Vineyard Management
- Perrier-Jouët owns 65 hectares of its own vineyards, of which approximately 40 hectares are Chardonnay, mainly concentrated in the Grand Cru communes of Cramant and Avize in the Côte des Blancs.
- Additional grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) come from communes such as Aÿ, Mailly, Dizy and Chouilly, with the house also purchasing grapes from trusted partners.
- The vineyards are certified HVE 3 (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and Terra Vitis, indicating a strong commitment to sustainable and ecologically responsible viticulture.
Approach and Production
- The champagne is made using the traditional method, with only the first, finest pressing (cuvée) used for the top cuvées to guarantee softness and complexity.
- The Grand Brut (the best seller) ages for at least three years on the lees, while the prestigious Belle Époque ages for at least five years.
- The dosage varies per cuvée: the Grand Brut has 10 grams of sugar per litre, the Blason Rosé 10 grams, and the slightly sweeter Nuit Blanche 20 grams.
Main Champagnes
- Grand Brut: The non-vintage flagship, a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, known for its freshness and balance.
- Blason Rosé: A rosé champagne made by adding red wine from Aÿ and Vincelles, consisting of 50% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 25% Chardonnay.
- Belle Époque: The prestige cuvée, available in various millésimes (including 2007, 2004, 2002) and versions such as Blanc de Blancs and Rosé, recognisable by its artistic bottle design.
- Blanc de Blancs: A 100% Chardonnay champagne that emphasises the finesse and floral characteristics of the house.
