Champagne Pascal Hénin is an independent family business based in Aÿ, a renowned Grand Cru village in the Marne region, close to Épernay. The estate is run as a Récoltant-Manipulant (RM), which means that all winemaking, from pressing to bottling, takes place on its own premises.
History and Family
The estate was founded in 1990/1992 by Pascal and Delphine Hénin, who continue the family tradition. Their son Romain Hénin, a qualified winegrower and oenologist, is gradually taking over management and adding his personal stamp to the cuvées. The business combines centuries-old knowledge with modern technologies and is characterised by the complementarity between Pascal (in vineyard and cellar) and Delphine (hospitality).
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate manages 7.5 hectares of vineyard land, spread over 22 different plots. This location across various crus and exposures provides a complex blend. The grape varieties are 30% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Meunier. The plots are spread over:
- Grand Cru: Aÿ and Chouilly
- Premier Cru: Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Dizy
- Vallée de la Marne: Troissy and Cerseuil
Approach and Style
Vinification follows traditional Champagne practices, with attention to nature and the environment. The blends are made within the family to guarantee the house's characteristic taste. The champagnes are known as fruity, fresh, elegant and balanced, with a typical creaminess that recurs in every cuvée. Romain Hénin sometimes opts for "natural" profiles, as in the cuvée L’étang de nos souvenirs.
Main Cuvées
The range is varied and includes both classic blends and specialities:
- Brut Tradition: A classic, balanced blend.
- Brut Réserve: A vinous and harmonious cuvée.
- Brut Rosé: Obtained by maceration, aromatic in character.
- Brut Prestige & Millésime: High-quality and vintage champagnes.
- Specialities: Such as L'Appel de la Forêt (80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay) and Le Gamin du Terroir (60% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier).
