## History The wine tradition of the Maillart family goes back to 1753, with documents that even suggest a lineage from 1533. Today the 9th generation is at the helm; Nicolas Maillart returned to the estate in 2003 after studying oenology, and resumed production from his own grapes in 2009. Since 2025 the estate has two stars in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France and in 2021 Nicolas was named "Best Champagne winemaker".
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate is located in Écueil in the Montagne de Reims and owns exclusively vineyards classified Premier Cru and Grand Cru in villages such as Écueil, Bouzy and Villers-Allerand. The vineyard area is approximately 9 to 15 hectares, with a grape variety distribution of about 75% Pinot Noir, complemented by Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The estate practises sustainable viticulture and is certified for HVE level 3 and Viticulture Durable, with energy consumption largely covered by solar panels.
Approach
The winemaking is aimed at authenticity and preserving the expression of the terroir. The must ferments in oak barrels and uses only indigenous yeasts. The champagnes generally undergo no malolactic fermentation, are not filtered or fined and contain minimal sulphite. The ageing time is relatively short, about 9 months, to preserve the fresh and pure characteristics of the grapes.
Champagnes and Awards
The range includes various styles, including the iconic Jolivettes (Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs) and the Platine (Premier Cru). The Jolivettes was named no. 1 of the 100 best champagnes in the blanc de noirs category by the Revue du Vin de France in 2021. Other notable cuvées are the Montchenot and the Rosé Grand Cru.
