Nicolas Feuillatte is the youngest major Champagne house and the best-selling champagne brand in France, based in Chouilly at the foot of the Côte des Blancs. The house is known for its modern, accessible style and is the third-largest champagne producer in France.
History
The brand name was originally launched in 1976 by the entrepreneur Nicolas Feuillatte (1926-2014), who created a champagne with less acidity to suit women's preferences. In 1986 he sold the brand name to the Centre Vinicole de Chouilly, a cooperative founded in 1972 by Henri Macquart. This collaboration transformed a local storage cooperative into a worldwide conglomerate that brings the cooperative's brands together under the well-known name Nicolas Feuillatte.
Vineyards and Working Group
The cooperative is the largest gathering point of winegrowers in Champagne and acts as a behemoth in the region.
- Number of growers: The organisation unites more than 5,000 winegrowers (sometimes quoted as 4,500 or 5,500) affiliated with 83 to 85 cooperatives.
- Vineyards: The grapes come from approximately 2,200 to 2,250 hectares of vineyard, which amounts to about 7% of the total Champagne region.
- Regions: The grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) are harvested from the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, Côteaux du Sézanne, the Ardre Valley, the Marne Valley and the Massif de Saint-Thierry.
Champagnes and Production
The house produces more than 20 million bottles a year, with a focus on quality through the use of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.
- Iconic Cuvées: The Réserve Exclusive Brut is the flagship and best-selling champagne. Other important cuvées are the Réserve Exclusive Rosé, Palmes d’Or (for great vintages), Brut Extrem’ (Brut Nature) and Cuvée Spéciale.
- Style: The champagnes are known for their finesse, precision and elegance, often achieved through a blend of many different plots and years for the non-vintage cuvées.
- Visit: The house offers tours in Chouilly (CD 40A), where visitors can see the cellars, the remuagery and the disgorgement halls. The visit lasts an average of 80 minutes.
