History: The estate has a five-generation history that began in 1870, when ancestors fled the war in Alsace to Rizaucourt. After working as carpenters and nurserymen they became winegrowers. Adeline and Nicolas brought their own vision, aimed at champagnes with character, and expanded the family with children such as Aliénor (2013), Balthazar (2015) and Napoléon (2019), each of whom was given their own cuvée.
Vineyards: Nicolas Bass is a récoltant-manipulant (RM) that manages 6 hectares of vineyards in Rizaucourt-Buchey, in the Haute-Marne (Côte des Bars). The estate lies in a UNESCO World Heritage area and is part of the Route Touristique du Champagne. The vineyards lie east of the Côte des Bars, near Colombey-les-Deux-Églises.
Approach: As winegrowers who harvest and vinify their own grapes, Adeline and Nicolas follow a fully independent approach. They vinify their champagnes in their own cellars in Rizaucourt, including an authentic vaulted cellar from 1850. Their philosophy is aimed at gourmet and relaxed champagnes that reflect the character of the Haute-Marne and are suitable for appropriate meals.
Champagnes: The offering includes specific cuvées named after the couple's children, such as the Brut Tradition (after Balthazar) and a Blanc de Noirs (after Napoléon). The champagnes are characterised as full-bodied, ripe and structured, particularly after long ageing on the lees (more than three years). Besides these special editions they also produce standard cuvées that embody their artisanal identity.
