Champagne Mondet is a traditional champagne house founded in 1926 by Jules Mondet, based in Cormoyeux (Marne Valley, France). The present business is the result of the merger of two winegrowing families (Mondet and Pognot/Mongardien) and is now run by the fourth generation.
History
- 1926: Jules Mondet begins vinification on small plots.
- 1958: Eliane and Daniel Mondet begin harvesting and pressing in Cormoyeux.
- 1969: Francis Mondet takes over management and expands the estate.
- Today: The fourth generation (Line/Laurent Beupuist and Laurence/Frédéric Bernardin) runs the house, which is known for its quality champagnes and numerous awards (including Gold in 2020 for Brute Intense).
Vineyards and Terroir
- Surface area: Approximately 11 hectares of own vineyards.
- Locations: Spread over Cormoyeux and Romery, with a small plot in Passy-Grigny.
- Soil: Characterised by a calcareous clay subsoil that acts as a thermal regulator and moisture buffer.
- Grapes: Three varieties are grown: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (the latter having the largest planting).
- Age: The average vine is 30 years old, with some plots up to 60 years.
Approach and Vinification
- Sustainable farming: The house works according to the principles of sustainable viticulture and is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE).
- Harvest and Pressing: Grapes are harvested by hand and pressed gently to extract the best juice.
- Cellar: Vinification takes place entirely on site under the direction of the chef de caves.
- Ageing: The bottles rest on cork for 6 to 12 months (or longer, depending on the cuvée, with a general ageing of 3-7 years for some ranges).
- Cellars: The house has 200 metres of natural chalk cellars at a depth of 20-30 metres, where the wine is kept constantly at 10-12°C.
Champagnes and Range
- Brut Nature (Dosage Zéro): An unsweetened, pure champagne (awarded Silver at the Decanter World Wine Awards).
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from Chardonnay, suitable as an aperitif or with seafood.
- Brut Rosé: A blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier, suitable with smoked salmon or desserts.
- Other: The house also produces Brute Intense and champagnes in oak barrels.
