Champagne Millot (also known as Millot Père et Fils) is a family business based in Verpillières-sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar, located in the heart of the Vallée de l’Ource in the Aube department. The house combines a long family history with a modern, environmentally conscious approach.
History and Family
The origins of the house date back to 1990, when Philippe Millot, together with his parents Roland and Marcelle, took the first steps in champagne production. The first cuvée, the Brut Distinction, was released at the time in a limited run (3,333 bottles) and is now the house's calling card. The family currently spans six generations; in 2015 the eldest daughter, Tiphaine, joined the business to represent the sixth generation. The business is legally established as an Exploitation agricole à responsabilité limitée (EARL).
Vineyards and Terroir
The champagne house manages 12.5 hectares of vineyards, which have been in family ownership for five generations. The vineyards lie in the Côte des Bar, a region known for its calcareous soils. The grape varieties are mainly Pinot Noir (for the dominant structure) and Chardonnay (for freshness and finesse). The entire process, from harvest to bottle, takes place on the estate, ensuring complete control over quality.
Approach and Sustainability
Millot practises sustainable viticulture (viticulture raisonnée) that is strongly focused on respect for the environment. These efforts were recognised with the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) label in 2016. This certificate identifies farms committed to methods that protect biodiversity and the ecosystem. The family sees this as a natural continuation of their respect for the land they have worked for generations.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The portfolio of Champagne Millot includes several cuvées that reflect the characteristics of the terroir:
- Brut Distinction: The iconic house cuvée, consisting of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. This blend produces a wine with roundness and power, combined with lightness and finesse, ideal as an aperitif.
- Odyssée de Marcelle: A recent addition to the range, this is a 100% Pinot Noir cuvée. It is a blend of reserve wines that capture the essence of the terroir, with rich and balanced aromas.
- Pur Noir: An exclusive cuvée made entirely from Pinot Noir from the Côte des Bar, known for its character, power and roundness.
- Demi-Sec Distinction: A medium-sweet version of the Distinction blend, specifically recommended with desserts and at the end of the meal.
- Millésime: A vintage cuvée, in which in exceptional years (such as 2018) extra care is taken to capture the specific characteristics of that year.
