Champagne Michel Fagot is a family-run business based in Rilly-la-Montagne (Montagne de Reims), founded in 1900 and now four generations strong. The current management is in the hands of Olivier Fagot, who continues the traditional values of the house.
History The maison celebrates its 124th anniversary in 2026. The house arose from the merger of the Fagot and Rousseau families, who were both passionate about winegrowing. The name Michel Fagot refers to Michel Fagot, a former owner who gave the house an identity of its own.
Vineyards The estate has 15 hectares of vineyards, divided over 36 plots in four prestigious Premier Cru villages:
- Rilly-la-Montagne (the heart of the estate)
- Trigny
- Villers-Allerand
- Hermonville
The vineyards are managed according to principles inspired by biodynamics, with respect for soil health and biodiversity. The average age of the vines is about 30 years.
Winemaking Michel Fagot combines centuries-old traditional techniques with modern technology. The winemaking emphasises the terroir and authenticity. The grapes are harvested by hand and pressed with a traditional press. In the cellar both modern stainless steel cuves and tronconic vats are used to age the wine and balance the acidity.
Champagnes The collection consists mainly of Premier Cru champagnes, known for their finesse, freshness and complexity. Important cuvées are:
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay.
- Brut Tradition: A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Brut Rosé: An elegant rosé.
- Millésime: Vintage champagnes (e.g. 2009, 2007).
- Le Clos de Marzilly: An exclusive cuvée made from 100% Pinot Meunier from an enclosed plot, often seen as the ambassador of the house.
- Réserve Perpétuelle: A special blend of reserve wines.
Visitors can visit the estate for a tasting and a look at the cellars, where the historic press and the fermentation rooms can be seen. Opening hours are generally Tuesday to Saturday, closed on Sunday, Monday, 1 May, 15 August, 11 November and 25 December.
