Champagne Lelarge-Pugeot is a family-run business in Vrigny (Premier Cru, Montagne de Reims) with a history going back to 1799, when Pierre-Henri Lelarge bought his first vineyards. The name Lelarge-Pugeot arose in the 1980s when Dominique Lelarge married Dominique Pugeot; they took over the business and expanded it into a well-known producer of natural champagnes.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate manages 8.7 hectares of vineyards on chalky, loamy and sandy soils. The plantings consist of 4.4 ha Meunier (the ancestral variety of Vrigny), 2.8 ha Pinot Noir and 1.5 ha Chardonnay. The family works exclusively with its own grapes (producteur récoltant) and encourages biodiversity by planting fruit trees between the vines and placing beehives in the vineyards.
Winemaking: Biodynamics Since 2010 the estate has been organically certified (Ecocert) and since 2017 fully biodynamically certified (Demeter). The viticulture is intensive and true to nature: ploughing is done with horses, no pesticides or herbicides have been used since 2000, and the vinification is low-intensity. Dosage is kept to a minimum, sulphite addition is very low, and there are cuvées with 0 added sulphite and 0 dosage.
Champagnes and Wines The portfolio is characterised by expressive, terroir-true wines with little intervention:
- Luna series: Three 100% natural cuvées (without sulphite/additions) based on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blends, fermented and aged in oak.
- Nature et Non Dosé: A brut nature champagne with no added sugar or sulphite.
- Les Meuniers de Clémence: A 100% Pinot Meunier cuvée.
- Coteaux Champenois: Still wines, including a red Pinot Noir that was possibly mentioned in Le Monde.
- Traditional Champagnes: Such as the Tradition Extra Brut and Rosé de Saignée, often aged in foudres or tanks for pure fruit expression.
