History The champagne house Julien Chopin is a family business located in the village of Monthelon, on the southern slopes of Épernay. The Chopin family has been growing vines in this area since the 18th century, but the brand was officially founded in 1947 by the visionary Julien Chopin. The third generation, Emmanuel Chopin (grandson of the founder), took over in 2006 and combines tradition with innovation.
Vineyards The estate manages about 7 hectares of vineyards divided over two key regions:
- Coteaux Sud d'Épernay: Here Pinot Meunier dominates (about 52%), the favourite grape of the villages of Monthelon, Mancy and Moussy.
- Côte des Blancs: This area, including Chouilly, Cuis and Grauves, mainly yields Chardonnay (about 42%).
- A small percentage of Pinot Noir is also grown.
The vineyards are managed according to the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certificate, with attention to ecologically responsible farming.
Winemaking As a Négociant-Manipulant, Julien Chopin retains full control over the production process, from harvest to bottling in its own cellars. The philosophy focuses on quality and authenticity, with a strong emphasis on low dosage (sugar addition). This allows the purity of the aromas, the freshness and the elegance of the terroir to come into their own. The champagnes are described as honest, characterful and with a touch of artistic freedom.
Champagnes and Specialities The range is divided into the "Originelles" and "Classiques" collections, and includes various styles:
- Blanc de Noirs: For example the Les Originelles Blancs de Noirs, made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Blanc de Blancs: Such as the Les Originelles Blanc de Blancs, mainly from Chardonnay.
- Millésimés: Selected vintages, such as the 2014 Blanc de Blancs.
- Ratafias Champenois: A unique speciality of the house, produced per grape variety (Chardonnay, Meunier, Pinot Noir) and even a worldwide exclusive Pinot Blanc Ratafia.
- Brut Nature: For example the 70 Ans, a zero-dosage champagne.
Visitors can visit the estate for tours and tastings, often with champagnes paired with nibbles. The address is 1 bis Rue Gaston Poittevin, 51530 Monthelon, and it is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00.
