Champagne J.M. Tissier is a family business based in Chavot-Courcourt, on the southern slopes of Épernay, the capital of the Champagne region in France. The history of the house goes back to 1931, when Diogène Tissier laid the foundations for what is now a three- to four-generation family business.
History and Family
- Founding: Diogène Tissier began vinifying and selling champagne in 1931, a turn he made after having difficulty selling his grapes.
- Generations: The business has been passed from father to son: Diogène → Jean-Marie → Jacques Tissier.
- Current Generation: Jacques Tissier founded the J.M. Tissier brand in 1998 in honour of his father Jean-Marie. He works with his wife Marie-Christine and their son Anthony, who has been active in the business since 2025. The next generation, Gaëtan and Anthony, will follow later.
Vineyards and Terroir
- Area: The estate manages a vineyard area of about 5.95 hectares (sometimes stated as 5.35 ha).
- Location: The vineyards are spread over Chavot-Courcourt, Moussy, Pierry, Épernay and the Sézannais.
- Grape varieties: The blends consist of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir.
- Soil: The terroir is argilo-calcaire, which contributes to the authenticity and finesse of the champagnes.
Winemaking and Philosophy
- Sustainability: The Tissier family practises sustainable viticulture with an emphasis on manual work and respect for the ecosystem.
- Certifications: In 2021 the estate received the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and VDC (Viticulture Durable de Champagne) certifications.
- Biodynamics: Since the 2000s Jacques Tissier has practised integrated pest management, using, among other things, Norwegian seaweed to strengthen the vines' natural resistance and reduce the use of pesticides by 30%.
- Visits: The estate is open 7 days a week by appointment, with a capacity for up to 60 people for cellar visits and tastings.
