The champagne house Hugues Godmé is based in Verzenay (Grand Cru) in the Montagne de Reims and is known for its strict application of biodynamic viticulture. The family history goes back to the 1930s, with Hugues Godmé running the estate since 1978 and carrying out the conversion to organic (2013) and biodynamic (2014) certification.
The vineyards cover about 40 hectares (sometimes stated as 7.5-14 ha certified) and are spread over four villages: Verzenay, Verzy, Villers-Marméry and Ville Dommange. The soils consist mainly of chalk, limestone and clay, which contributes to the mineral structure and complexity of the champagnes.
The approach emphasises respect for the natural balance, hand harvesting and vinification in oak barrels and traditional vats. The champagnes age for a long time on the lees (30 months to more than 10 years) and are often produced with low or no dosage (Extra Brut/Brut Nature), resulting in refined, pure wines.
The product range includes various cuvées, including:
- Blanc de Noirs (mainly Pinot Noir from Verzenay/Verzy).
- Blanc de Blancs (Chardonnay, often from Villers-Marméry).
- Monocépages (single grape variety, such as Pinot Meunier or Chardonnay).
- Prestige cuvées such as the Spécial Club and Les Champs Saint Martin.
- Rosé champagnes with light dosage.
Visitors can visit the estate for tours of the press, oak barrels and chalk cellars, followed by a tasting. The address is 10 rue de Verzy, 51360 Verzenay, and the website is https://champagne-hugues-godme.com.
