Champagne Hénin Delouvin is an independent wine house based in Aÿ, near Épernay, with a history going back to 1130 and linked to King Henry IV of Navarre. The family business, now managed in the sixth generation by Jacky Hénin, produces champagnes based on respect for the environment and tradition.
History and Location
The history of Aÿ-Champagne, home of the house, dates from 1130, when winegrowing began to play a central role. King Henry IV of Navarre, also known as "Sire d'Aÿ", placed his presses here to produce the prestigious wines of Aÿ, whose reputation has only grown since. The house is known for its finesse and quality, rooted in this rich historical context.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate manages 7 hectares of vineyards, spread over several communes and classifications:
- Grand Cru: Aÿ-Champagne and Chouilly.
- Premier Cru: Dizy, Grauves and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
- Vallée de la Marne: Cerseuil and Leuvrigny.
The vineyards are certified under the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) standards (level 3), which shows that the wine house is committed to sustainability and the preservation of biodiversity.
Winemaking
Vinification is carried out with great care in the cellar to preserve the characteristics of the terroirs. The bottles rest for several years in the cellars for quality ageing. At the end of vinification a tasting is held to assemble the year's harvest and the reserve wines into champagnes with rich aromas. The wine house uses the three classic Champagne grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay.
Champagnes
Hénin Delouvin offers a diverse range, from blends to monocépages (single-varietal champagnes). Some well-known cuvées are:
- Harmonie Brut and Harmonie DRY (blend).
- Grande Réserve Premier Cru.
- Pinot Noir Premier Cru (Blanc de Noirs, Extra Brut).
- Chardonnay Grand Cru (Blanc de Blancs, Brut).
- Millésime 2014 Grand Cru (Vintage).
- AEIUS and Imagination Grand Cru (Premium/Extra Brut).
The champagnes are available in the price range of about €20 to more than €40, depending on the type and vintage. The wine house receives visitors for cellar visits from Monday to Saturday (09:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00).
