Georges Vesselle is a family champagne house based in Bouzy, one of the best Grand Cru villages on the southern slope of the Montagne de Reims. The family has been active there since the 16th century; the current namesake, Georges Vesselle, was mayor of Bouzy for 25 years and expanded the operation, while his sons Bruno and Éric run the business today.
The vineyards cover about 17 to 18 hectares and lie entirely in the Grand Cru appellation. The soil type is chalky-argillaceous and the vines stand on an ideal southern slope, which ensures optimal sunshine and ripening. The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale Level 3 and follows rational viticulture (no biodynamics).
The champagnes are composed of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay, coming from the estate's own vineyards in Bouzy. This ratio emphasises the power and fruitiness of the Pinot Noir, combined with the finesse of the Chardonnay. The wines are aged in deep chalk cellars (16 metres deep) at a constant 10°C. The house also produces Bouzy Rouge, a still red wine.
Well-known cuvées are:
- Brut Non Millésimé Grand Cru: The base champagne, often awarded medals.
- Cuvée Juline Grand Cru: A highly regarded blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay.
- Brut Rosé Grand Cru: Fruity and elegant, made with Pinot Noir.
- Bouzy Rouge Grand Cru: Still red wine, sometimes aged in oak.
- Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs/Blancs: Specific varieties that maximise the expression of terroir.
