Georges Rémy is an artisanal champagne house in Bouzy (Montagne de Reims), owned by the third generation, which began bottling the estate in 2014. The estate specialises in high-quality Grand Cru and Premier Cru champagnes, as well as red Côteaux Champenois.
History
- Georges Rémy's ancestors already grew grapes in Bouzy.
- His grandfather was the first to produce his own wine in 1950.
- Georges Rémy first worked in Bordeaux, where he developed his love of red wine, and returned to the family tradition via this detour.
- Since 2014 he has produced champagnes in addition to red wine, with a starting production of only 6,000 bottles that later grew to 16,000-25,000 bottles a year.
Vineyards
- The estate manages about 4.5 to 5.3 hectares of vineyards.
- The plots are spread over four communes: Bouzy and Ambonnay (Grand Cru), and Tauxières-Mutry and Louvois (Premier Cru).
- The vineyards consist of 1 hectare of Chardonnay and 4.3 hectares of Pinot Noir.
- The soil is mainly clay with a layer of chalk beneath; in Tauxières the soil is thinner and chalkier.
- The average age of the vineyards is about 40 years.
Method
- The estate has been working on organic certification since 2015, with the first certified harvest in 2018.
- Since 2012 the soil has been ploughed with a plough, and biodynamic practices are applied, such as the use of preparations 500 and 500p and teas of nettle and yarrow.
- The vines are pruned in Cordon de Royat and Guyot, with a thinning of 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 rows to raise quality.
- Georges Rémy harvests at high ripeness (often above 11.5% potential alcohol) and uses no chaptalisation.
- Vinification and ageing take place in oak barrels on fine lees (10 months for champagne, 15-20 months for red wine), which contributes to the complexity and softness of the wine.
- The champagnes are predominantly Brut Nature (no dosage) or very low in dosage.
Champagnes and Cuvées
Some notable cuvées from Georges Rémy are:
- Les Hauts Clos: A Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir) from Bouzy, known for its finesse and complex, floral aroma.
- Les Vaudayants: A Grand Cru Pinot Noir (Blanc de Noirs or Rosé) from Bouzy, often with a small percentage of red wine added for the rosé version.
- Les Muits: A Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) from Tauxières, known for its fresh citrus and grapefruit notes.
- Les Quatre Terroirs: A Premier Cru blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the four communes (Bouzy, Ambonnay, Louvois, Tauxières), often with a high proportion of Pinot Noir.
- Le Mont de Tauxières: A Grand Cru blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay.
- Bouzy Rouge: Red wine (Côteaux Champenois) of 100% Pinot Noir, also aged in barrels.
The champagnes are praised for their expressiveness, finesse and drinkability, and are suitable for long keeping.
