## History
Maison de Champagne Gardet was founded in 1895 by Charles Gardet, an enterprising former shopkeeper, initially in Épernay. In the 1930s his son Georges Gardet moved the maison to Chigny-les-Roses (Montagne de Reims) to develop the brand. For several generations the family business has been run by the Prieux family, who combine a philosophy of respect for tradition with modern technology.
Vineyards and Terroir
The house vineyards cover 7 hectares, entirely classified as Premier Cru, located in Chigny-les-Roses, Ludes and Rilly-la-Montagne. The grape varieties are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The wines are produced in a Belle Époque estate at 13 rue Georges Legros in Chigny-les-Roses.
Method
Gardet takes a small-scale, quality-focused approach with attention to authenticity. Characteristic are the extra-long ageing and the use of oak barrels for the young still wine (reserves), which gives a unique character. Some bottles are still turned by hand (remuage) to remove sediment. Winemaker Stéphanie Sucheyre (since 2007) guards the tradition and combines it with modern precision.
Champagnes
The house produces various cuvées with specific compositions and dosage:
- Brut Réserve: The best-selling blend (equal parts Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay) with a quarter reserves from oak barrels; ~5 g/l sugar.
- Brut Selected Reserve: Similar to the Réserve but the young wine rests a year in oak barrels; ~8 g/l sugar.
- Brut Tradition: 90% composed of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier; 8-9 g/l sugar.
- Brut Rosé: Coloured with 15% red wine; 8 g/l sugar.
- Brut Premier Cru: From grapes from Hautvillers (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier); 8-9 g/l sugar.
- Demi-Sec: Sweeter style (45% Pinot Noir, 45% Pinot Meunier, 10% Chardonnay); 35 g/l sugar.
- Prestige Charles Millésime: Prestige cuvée (70% Chardonnay Grand/1er Cru, 30% Pinot Noir 1er Cru); chilled to prevent malolactic fermentation and aged 8 years on the yeast; 8 g/l sugar.
- Prestige Charles Rosé de Saignée Millésime Premier Cru: Rosé from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier via the saignée method; 8 g/l sugar.
