Champagne Froment-Griffon is a family business based in Sermiers (Montagne de Reims), a village that was classified 1er Cru in 2003. The current owners, Mathias Froment and his wife Marie, are both trained oenologists and took over the estate that has been in the family for four generations.
- History: The estate was originally founded by Mathias' great-grandfather. His parents took over the operation in the 1970s and created the Froment-Griffon brand by combining their names. Mathias and Marie, who met during their studies in Burgundy, continue the family legacy with a focus on authenticity and terroir.
- Vineyards: The estate has roughly 6.2 to 7.4 hectares of vineyard, mainly located in Sermiers. The vineyards are planted with the three traditional Champagne grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The vines stand on chalky soil, typical of the Montagne de Reims.
- Method: Froment-Griffon follows a sustainable approach with certifications for HVE (High Environmental Value) and VDC (Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne). The winemakers use alternative methods on part of the vineyard and let the champagnes age for a long time in their cellars, sometimes more than 10 years, to develop complexity and character.
- Champagnes: The range includes various cuvées, including:
- Tradition 1er Cru: A brut often dominated by Pinot Meunier.
- Grande Réserve 1er Cru: A blend of white and black grapes.
- Alexiana 1er Cru: A Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay), named after the great-grandmother.
- Vindémia: A vintage cuvée of specific harvest years.
- Xtra Brut: A low-dosage champagne with plenty of freshness.
- Grand Rosé: A blended rosé champagne.
The champagnes are praised for their fresh fruity aromas, minerality and elegant structure, with prices mostly between €20 and €40. The estate can be visited and the champagnes are available via the official website champagne-froment-griffon.com.
