Champagne Cattier is an independent family business that has been active for 13 generations in Chigny-les-Roses (Montagne de Reims), with roots going back to 1625. The house was officially founded in 1918 when Jean Cattier, after sustaining injuries in the First World War, sold his first bottles of champagne. Since 2011 the estate has been run by Alexandre Cattier, who combines tradition with modern oenology and sustainable practices.
History and Vineyards
The family has owned vineyards in the region since the 17th century. In 1950 Jean Cattier acquired the Clos du Moulin, a rare walled vineyard of 2.2 hectares. Today the estate comprises 33 hectares of premier cru vineyards, planted mainly with Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Production is approximately 1 million bottles a year, of which 60% is exported.
Approach
Cattier is classified as NM (Négociant-Manipulant), meaning the house both uses its own grapes and purchases from local growers. The grapes are harvested by hand and the champagnes age for at least 4 years in the underground cellars of the property, which are hewn up to 30 metres deep into the chalk rock. The viticulture is certified to the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE level 3) and Viticulture Durable de Champagne (VDC) standards.
