Beaumont des Crayères is a champagne house and cooperative in Mardeuil, founded in 1955 by a group of winegrowers from the hills of Épernay to add value to their vineyards. The structure is a Société coopérative agricole with its head office in Mardeuil (Marne), headed by Jean Plancon since June 2016.
Vineyards The house has 85 to 87 hectares of vineyard, mainly located on the coteaux d'Épernay and in surrounding municipalities such as Cumières, Hautvillers, Dizy and Avize. The soil type is typically chalky, which contributes to the quality of the grapes. The vineyards are entirely self-supplied and comprise:
- 60% Pinot Meunier: For fruitiness and roundness.
- 25% Chardonnay: For freshness and finesse.
- 15% Pinot Noir: For structure and complexity.
Approach Beaumont des Crayères is known for its strict quality control and sustainable viticulture (viticulture raisonnée). The winegrowers vinify their own harvest, distinguishing between Cœur de cuvée (best pressing) and Cuvée seconde.
- The Cœur de cuvée is used for the millésimes and prestige cuvées.
- The cellar master vinifies musts separately by grape variety and by plot.
- The house is one of the few that states the date of dégorgement (disgorgement) on the label, so that consumers can determine freshness.
- The caveau (tasting room) holds the largest champagne bottle and cork in the world, recognised by Guinness.
Champagnes Production is approximately 600,000 bottles per year, of which 70% to 80% is exported to more than 25 countries. The nine cuvées are regularly awarded in guides such as Bettane et Desseauve and Hachette. Well-known cuvées are:
- Grande Réserve: The Brut Sans Année, the house's calling card, with 60% Pinot Meunier.
- Grand Prestige: A top blend (e.g. 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier) with longer ageing.
- Fleur de Meunier: A Brut Nature (no added sugar) that emphasises the fruitiness of the Pinot Meunier.
- Nostalgie: A millésime champagne, often Chardonnay-dominant.
