Champagne Bauser is a family business based in Les Riceys, the only village in the Champagne region entitled to three different appellations: Champagne, Rosé des Riceys and Coteaux Champenois. The website is https://champagne-bauser.com.
History The origins lie in the 1960s, when René Bauser began to assemble his own vineyards. After having worked as a contract worker and cooperative member, he launched his own brand in 1970 (some sources give 1975 as the official founding date of the current structure). Since 2000 the household has been run by his three children: Sophie (commercial), Frédéric (vineyards) and Sébastien (cellar), who continue the craftsmanship of their parents René and Claudie.
Vineyards The estate manages between 14 and 23 hectares of vineyards around Les Riceys. The terroir is strongly geared towards Pinot Noir, which is the dominant grape here. This focus on Pinot Noir is essential for the production of both the sparkling champagnes and the still rosé and red wines under the Rosé des Riceys and Coteaux Champenois appellations.
Approach Bauser combines artisanal tradition with modern innovation. Winemaking often takes place by gravity to spare the grapes. A distinctive detail is the use of various fermentation and ageing vessels, including amphorae, oak barrels, foudres and stainless steel tanks. This variety of wood and clay contributes to the complexity and character of the cuvées.
Champagnes The range mainly comprises Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir). Important cuvées are:
- Cuvée Brut Première: A Grande Réserve Solera of 100% Pinot Noir.
- Grande Réserve: A classic, accessible blend.
- Cuvée Fidélia: A reserved cuvée that often combines Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
- Excellence: A higher-quality cuvée with high scores (e.g. 91/100).
- Cuvée Délicat's: A lighter, fruity style.
In addition to the champagnes, the house also produces Rosé des Riceys (a popular still rosé from Pinot Noir) and Coteaux Champenois (still red and white wines). Tastings and cellar visits are available by appointment for a fee of approximately €15.
