Champagne Bauget-Jouette is a family business in Épernay that has existed since 1822 and is now run by the fifth generation, under the leadership of Nicolas Bauget. The house is known for its traditional approach and its focus on the expression of terroir, with all champagnes vinified in the historic cellars of the property.
History and Ownership
- The Bauget family has been winegrowing since the 19th century, but only launched the Bauget-Jouette brand in 1973 as a négociant.
- The name refers to the Jouette family, in particular Suzanne Bauget (née Jouette), who laid the foundation for the modern brand identity and remained active in the business until an advanced age.
- The business combines the trade of winegrower with that of négociant, which allows them both to process their own grapes and to blend.
Vineyards and Grape Varieties
- The estate manages approximately 10 to 13.5 hectares of vineyards, spread over 37 plots in prestigious areas: the Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne, Coteaux Sud d’Épernay and the Sézannais.
- The vineyards cover a total of 9 classified villages (crus), including well-known lieux-dits such as "Le Bignart", "Le Cloître" and "Les Grimprets".
- The grape varieties are divided as follows:
- Chardonnay (50%): Source of freshness and finesse, mainly from the Côte des Blancs.
- Pinot Meunier (40%): Provides fruitiness and softness, from the Vallée de la Marne (including Damery, Hautvillers).
- Pinot Noir (10%): Gives structure and elegance.
Approach and Vinification
- All champagnes are vinified and aged in Épernay, in cellars dug into the chalk in the 18th century and kept at a constant temperature (around 11°C).
- The estate takes a sustainable approach with grazing of the soil, no use of chemical herbicides (such as glyphosate), and is working towards HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale).
- Vinification emphasises precision and emotion, with partial ageing in barrels, controlled use of reserve wines and long ageing times to develop texture and depth.
- The harvest is predominantly by hand, followed by ageing on laths (râpées) of at least 20 months for the non-millésime cuvées.
Champagnes and Cuvées
- Cuvée Jouette: The house's iconic cuvée, a balanced blend of the three classic grape varieties, known for its elegance and complexity.
- Blanc de Blancs: A highly praised 100% Chardonnay, often distinguished in the Guide Hachette, with a distinctive floral profile.
- Carte Blanche: The house's main production (around 80,000 bottles/year), a light, fresh champagne that is ideal for cocktails or as an aperitif.
- Rosé Brut: A recent addition to the range, which scored 90/100 at Wine Enthusiast.
- Extra-Brut and Millésimes: The house also offers extra-brut cuvées and vintage champagnes (such as Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs) that capture the unique characteristics of specific years.
