Champagne Alain Mercier & Fils is a family business based in Passy-sur-Marne in the Vallée de la Marne, about an hour's drive from Paris. The estate is recognised as a Vigneron Indépendant (independent winegrower), which means that all production steps, from grape harvest to bottle, take place on its own premises.

History

The house was founded in 1920 by Émile Mercier. Knowledge and craftsmanship have been passed down through generations: grandfather Lucien and father Alain trained their son Romain Mercier to continue the business. Each generation has contributed to the identity of the brand, with Romain now at the helm and continuing the traditional philosophy.

Vineyards and Grapes

The vineyards lie on the green slopes of the Marne valley, with a panoramic view over the valley. Production focuses on the three traditional grape varieties of Champagne:

Chardonnay
Pinot Noir
Pinot Meunier

The grapes are grown and harvested with respect for the heritage of their ancestors.

Approach and Production

Alain and Romain Mercier use traditional techniques. A distinctive aspect of their approach is the use of stainless steel tanks and oak barrels for vinification. This ensures that each Champagne gets a recognisable identity of its own. The entire process, including the turning of the bottles and the removal of the sediment, takes place on the family estate.
