Champagne Alain Bernard is an independent winegrowing business (Vigneron Indépendant) based in Dizy (Marne, 51530), founded in 1912 by Arthur Bernard. The house is known for its family approach, with the cellars dug entirely by hand by the founder and the business still run by four generations, currently under the leadership of Benoît and Isabelle Bernard.
History and Family Tradition
- The Bernard family has been present in Hautvillers since the 17th century (as shown by a marriage certificate from 1698).
- Arthur Bernard, who in 1912 worked for a champagne house in Dizy, started producing his own champagne from a few vineyards around Hautvillers.
- He sold his champagne in the north of France and dug the underground cellars in his free time (weekends and public holidays).
- The business works according to the principles of craftsmanship and the "pleasure of pleasing", with respect for traditional work.
Vineyards and Terroir
- The vineyards cover approximately 8 hectares and lie on historic slopes of Dizy, Hautvillers and Cumières (both Premier Cru) and Aÿ (Grand Cru).
- All grapes come from its own plots; no fruit from outsiders is used.
- The grapes are grown with care, and on some plots (e.g. "Pierre Robert") horses are still used to work the soil.
- Well-known specific plots are "Grains d’Argent" (for Blanc de Blancs) and "Pierre Robert" (for Blanc de Noirs).
Approach and Production
- As an independent winegrower, the house makes champagne exclusively with its own grapes.
- Only the cuvées (the first pressings) are used, which leads to a refined and elegant profile.
- The wines are classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru, indicating that the vineyards belong to the best areas of Champagne.
- The business has recognised environmental qualities and is praised for its authenticity and accessibility.
