Champagne Alain Bailly is a family business in Serzy-et-Prin (Marne) with a history of six generations of winegrowers. Its origins lie with Henri Bailly in the 1940s, but the current estate was founded in 1962 by Alain Bailly and his wife Monique. Management passed to Franck Bailly in the 1990s, and today his son Maxime Bailly is the cellar master.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate has 13 hectares spread over 86 plots in the Ardre valley and the Montagne de Reims. The soil is rich and chalky, which is ideal for Pinot Meunier, the house's signature variety. Although plots of all three varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, are present, the emphasis is clearly on Meunier. The Chardonnay plots are in organic conversion (certification expected from 2023), and the estate is certified HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale).
Approach and Sustainability Alain Bailly practises integrated viticulture with respect for the soil and biodiversity, using chemical treatments only when mandatory. The grapes are harvested by hand and picked at optimum ripeness. Vinification takes place in small tanks to preserve the identity of the plots, with each sector processed separately. The champagnes age for at least 3 years on the fine lees before being decanted.
Champagnes and Cuvées The house produces seven different cuvées annually with consistent quality. Distinctive is the Rosé Les Parcellaires, made from 100% Pinot Meunier from the "Les Longs Vals" plots. The Brut Tradition is also popular, often dominated by Meunier for a fruity and lively taste. There is also a Brut Prestige, which is often rich in Chardonnay and sometimes ages in wooden barrels for complexity. The wines are sold through the estate and through professional channels.
