Champagne Thierry Fournier is a family business in the Vallée de la Marne (Festigny), run by the fourth and fifth generations of winegrowers. The history begins in the 1930s with the purchase of vineyards in Festigny, a village in the Flagot valley known as a cradle of the Pinot Meunier grape.
Vineyards and terroir The estate manages approximately 15 hectares of vineyards spread over 11 to 13 villages in the region, in particular around Festigny, Leuvrigny and Oeuilly. The grape varieties are distributed as follows:
- 80% Pinot Meunier
- 10% Chardonnay
- 10% Pinot Noir
The soils vary from clayey to chalky, with the chalky soils in the Flagot valley giving the Meunier more precision and class. The average age of the vines is 45 years.
Working methods and innovation Thierry Fournier practises lutte raisonnée (optimised pest control) and the brothers Julien and Maxime (fifth generation) are working on organic cultivation on approximately 4 hectares. A milestone was the purchase in 2018 of a former cooperative in Cuis, which opened fully renovated in 2023. This facility provides room for heavier vinification and extends the ageing time of the champagnes to 36 to 120 months on the lees, which contributes to their complex and vinous style.
Champagnes and range The range is characterised by a fin and gourmand (elegant and flavourful) profile with low dosages:
- Réserve Extra Brut NV: The flagship champagne, consisting of 70-80% Meunier with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It contains 40% reserve wine from a perpetual stock and rests for up to four years on the lees.
- Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV: Made from 100% Chardonnay from Oeuilly and Nesle-le-Reponds, with 18-24 months of ageing.
- Rosé Brut NV: A 100% Meunier rosé with 15 months of tirage for extra freshness.
- Millésime: The first vintage (2018) was made by the new generation.
- Les Grands Champs: A single-site Meunier from Leuvrigny, partly aged in oak barrels (228 and 350 litres) and partly in steel, with a minimum of three years of ageing.
