Champagne Tellier is an artisanal producer in Moussy, located between the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, run by Quentin Tellier (since 2016) and his father Christophe.
History The origins of the estate, originally Château des Conardins, go back to 1222. After the French Revolution the estate was rebuilt by Raymond Renaud in 1936. Christophe Tellier took it over in 1980, followed by his sons Quentin and Alexandre, who in 2016 officially adopted the name Champagne Tellier for their own cuvées.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate owns 12 hectares of vines, of which 3 hectares are retained for its own production. The 18 plots are spread over five villages:
- Moussy and Pierry (Premier Cru): Deep chalk soils, dominated by Pinot Meunier (59%), Chardonnay (35%) and Pinot Noir (6%).
- Chavot, Fontaine-sur-Aÿ and Cramant (Grand Cru): Shallower, superficial chalk soils.
The average age of the vines is 35 years, with a large share of massal selection to preserve the heritage.
Working Methods and Philosophy
- Parcel-by-parcel vinification: Each of the 18 plots is pressed and fermented separately to highlight micro-terroirs.
- Sustainability: The estate is HVE-certified and is converting to organic and biodynamic advice.
- Vinification: Gentle pressing with a 6,000 kg press, fermentation in wood (barrels from Leflaive and Pape Clément) and ageing in centuries-old cellars at a constant 11°C.
- Style: All the champagnes are millésimés (vintage) and brut/extra brut (little or no dosage).
Champagnes and Availability Tellier produces approximately 20,000 to 30,000 bottles per year. Besides its own cuvées, the estate sells 75% of its grapes to major houses such as Krug, Louis Roederer and Billecart-Salmon. Well-known cuvées are:
- Les Massales Millésimé Extra Brut: The estate's blend.
- 100% Pinot Meunier: Exclusively from the historic plots in Moussy.
- Coteaux Champenois: A small production of red wine from Pinot Noir as a reference to the Burgundy style.
