Champagne René Jolly is a family business in Landreville (Côte des Bar) with a history going back to 1737. The estate is recognised as a Vigneron Indépendant and produces champagne exclusively from its own grapes.
History
- The Jolly family has grown wine in Landreville for centuries, with written evidence going back to the 18th century.
- The estate has an 18th-century vaulted cellar and a linden tree from 1730.
- Pierre-Eric Jolly currently runs the estate, which is known for innovations such as a unique gravity-fed pressing and the traditional dégorgement à la volée (without ice).
Vineyards
- The estate manages 13.55 to 14 hectares spread over five of its own plots.
- The soil is Kimmeridgian, which gives the wines power, liveliness and minerality.
- The grape varieties are 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay.
- The vineyards are cultivated organically without chemical fertilisers; the grapes are harvested by hand at the point of optimal ripeness.
Working Methods
- The estate is fully autonomous: all tasks, from vineyard to bottle, are carried out by its own staff without subcontractors.
- Vinification takes place in small batches of 50 hl in order to isolate plots; malolactic fermentation is systematic.
- A short passage in wooden barrels is possible; the blend is put together exclusively by Pierre-Eric Jolly.
- The champagnes rest for 3 to 9 years in the old cellars before being disgorged.
Champagnes
- Blanc de Blancs Brut: 100% Chardonnay, from carefully selected plots.
- Cuvée R.J: An exceptional cuvée with 46% Pinot Noir and 54% Chardonnay (years 2010/2012), in which 15% of the wine ages in oak barrels.
- Cuvée R.J Rosé: A rare rosé de maceration of 100% Pinot Noir from the "la Guignelle" plot; only one cuvée per decade.
- Cuvée Édition: The ultimate cuvée, consisting of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay, aged on cork and agrafe (original closure) for 15 years.
- Vieux Marc de Champagne: A spirit speciality made by distilling grape residues, aged in oak.
