History: The Prieuré de Viverie, built in 1180 at the instigation of the Abbey of Montieramey, is a 12th-century Benedictine monastery that became national property after the French Revolution. The current owner, Vincent Grandpierre, is a 12th-generation winegrower (family history going back to 1705) and revived the viticultural function of the property. The complex, including an iconic oak barrel as an architectural element, has been restored into a unique oenotourism centre in the Côte des Bar.
Vineyards and Approach: The vineyards lie on sunny slopes around Viviers-sur-Artaut and mainly use Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The house style is sustainable and environmentally conscious: chemical weed control is prohibited, weeds are controlled mechanically or by hand and the soil is grassed. Vinification is traditional; for the Prieuré de Viverie line only the "tête de cuvée" (the purest juice) is used, with oak ageing for Chardonnay and a minimum of 7 years of ageing in the bottle.
Champagnes: The house produces two distinct lines:
- Champagnes Robert-Grandpierre: A more accessible series (including Blanc de Noirs, Rosé de Saignée, Prestige) that reflects the classic house profile.
- Champagnes Prieuré de Viverie: An exclusive, millésime-only line that pays tribute to the history of the priory through four specific cuvées: Cuvée 1180, Cuvée 1205, Cuvée 1515 and Cuvée 1740. These champagnes are separate from standard production and emphasise terroir and spirituality.
