Champagne Philippe Martin is a historic champagne house located at 355 Rue du Bois des Jots in Cumières, a commune classified Premier Cru. The house combines centuries-old traditions with modern technology to produce top-quality champagnes.
History and Family The origins of the house go back to 1730, when the Martin family began winegrowing in Cumières. The current name and identity are strongly linked to Martin-Robert, who in 1892 had the iconic "Maison 1892" built, recognisable by the intertwined initials "MR" on the façade. Since 2017 the family business has been run by Adeline Martin, who took over the work from her father Philippe. The estate holds the status of récoltant-manipulant and produces approximately 65,000 to 80,000 bottles a year.
Vineyards and Sustainability The estate covers 10 hectares of vineyards, expanded from the original 4.5 hectares in 1970. The vineyards lie not only in Cumières, but also in the surrounding villages of Hautvillers, Damery, Verneuil and Vitry-le-François. The family practises a "reasoned and sustainable" management of the vineyards, aimed at limiting plant protection products and preserving biodiversity (including through beehives). The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) and Vigneron Indépendant.
Approach and Production The winemaking varies per cuvée; the wines are raised in stainless steel vats or in oak barrels for more complexity. Besides standard production, the house offers oenotourism experiences, including visits to the pressing room and cellars, a 2CV ride through the vineyards and a museum visit. The visits usually end with a tasting of 3 to 5 champagnes.
Champagnes and Cuvées The range includes both classic and prestigious cuvées, centred on specific terroirs and wines:
- Blanc de Blancs: A 100% Chardonnay cuvée, awarded 91/100 points.
- Millésime: Vintage champagnes, such as the Millésime 2008 (90/100 points), a Premier Cru that ages seven years in the bottle.
- Rosé de Saignée: A powerful rosé made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Cumières Rouge: A red wine of 100% Pinot Noir from the Coteaux Champenois area.
- La Séduction: An exclusive cuvée of single-plot Pinot Noir, raised in oak barrels.
- L'Indispensable: The house style, a balance of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
