History: Champagne Philippe Gonet is a seventh-generation family business, founded in 1830. Since 2001 the estate has been run by Pierre Gonet (winemaker) and his sister Chantal Brégeon (commercial), who continue the craft after the death of their father Philippe. The estate is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs.
Vineyards: It owns 19 hectares of vineyards, spread over various terroirs including Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (Grand Cru), Vertus, Rilly-la-Montagne and Montgueux (Aube). The soil is mainly chalky. The grape varieties are Chardonnay (about two thirds) and Pinot Noir (together with Pinot Meunier for the rest), with much of the Chardonnay coming from its own land.
Approach: The grapes are harvested by hand. Pierre Gonet strives for minerality and purity, often with no or very little dosage (sometimes 0 g/l for Extra-Brut). Some cuvées are aged in barrels (foudres) for complexity. Production is modest (approx. 240,000 bottles a year) with a focus on high quality.
Champagnes:
- Belemnita Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru: Prestige cuvée from old vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, known for structure and depth.
- Roy Soleil Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru: Expressive, fresh Chardonnay with good value for money.
- Signature Blanc de Blancs: Smooth, fresh and supple introduction to the world of champagne.
- Brut Réserve: Blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Meunier, fruity and round.
- Extra-Brut 3210: Blanc de Blancs with zero dosage (Brut Nature), tight and mineral.
- Rosé Brut: Made from three parts Chardonnay and one part Pinot Noir, fresh and fruity.
