Philippe‌ Brugnon is an independent winegrower (vigneron indépendant) in Rilly-la-Montagne (Premier Cru, Montagne de Reims), about 10 km from Reims. The house is located at 16 rue Carnot and was officially founded in 1984, although the family history goes back to the late 1800s.

History and Family The business is a true family affair that has been producing champagnes for more than 50 years. Philippe Brugnon is the fourth-generation winegrower; his daughter Lucie joined in 2008 (some sources say 2010) as the fifth generation. Philippe is an active member of the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or, a guild that practises the art of sabering champagne bottles.

Vineyards and Grapes The grapes come from two Premier Cru terroirs that have been in the family for years:

The vineyards of Rilly-la-Montagne (from his mother).
The vineyards of Écueil (from his father).

The champagnes are made from the three classic champagne grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

Approach and Products Philippe Brugnon is a récoltant manipulant, which means he both does the harvest and takes care of the vinification. The champagnes are stored in limestone cellars. The range includes:

Brut Premier Cru: 65% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier; floral and fruity with notes of green apple.
Brut Rosé: 100% Pinot Noir; raspberry-coloured with aromas of red fruit.
Brut Cuvée Élégance: 30% Pinot Noir, 70% Chardonnay; fresh with notes of citrus fruit and apple.
Brut Millésimé: A selection from excellent years (e.g. 2016), also 30% Pinot Noir and 70% Chardonnay, aimed at connoisseurs.
Cuvée Crysta.

Visitors can visit the house by appointment, especially at weekends or on Friday afternoons.
