Champagne Oudart-Ortillon is a family business in Bassuet (Marne, Champagne), founded in 2001 by Jean-Christophe Oudart and Nathalie Ortillon, who replaced the traditional cooperative supply of their parents (Serge and Lydia Ortillon-Beaulieu) with fully independent production.
History and Terroir
The estate is based in the Coteaux Vitryats and works with craie soil (chalk) that promotes deep roots and mineral freshness. The vineyards are spread over Bassuet, Saint-Lumier-en-Champagne, Lisse-en-Champagne and Val-de-Vière, where mainly Chardonnay is grown, complemented by Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
Approach
Production takes place entirely on site using the méthode champenoise:
- Harvest and Pressing: Manual harvest and gentle pressing in traditional 4,000 kg presses.
- Vinification: Fermentation in thermostatic stainless steel tanks for aromatic freshness, followed by malolactic fermentation.
- Final product: Remuage, dégorgement and dosage take place on the estate, with the champagnes ageing on the lees for complexity.
Champagnes
The cellar offers a diverse range, including:
- Blanc de Blancs: 100% Chardonnay, known for its finesse.
- Blanc de Noirs: 100% Pinot Meunier, with a powerful, fruity structure.
- Rosé: A blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir/Meunier (vinified red).
- Brut Nouvelle Ère and Cuvée des Anges: The standard and selection cuvées.
- Millésime: Made from a single harvest year (e.g. 95% Chardonnay), aged on the lees.
- Ratafia: A traditional Champagne liqueur of must and marc.
Visitors can visit the cellar, cuverie and oak barrels by appointment and take part in tastings in the flowery courtyard.
