Champagne Michaël Hautem is a family estate in Villers-Marmery, a premier cru village in the Montagne de Reims, run by Michaël and Aurélie Hautem. Michaël spent many years in industrial electrical engineering before settling in 2009 to take over his father's estate. As Vignerons Indépendants, they make their champagnes and ratafia entirely on the estate.
Vineyards
All the vines are in Villers-Marmery: 2.78 hectares spread over 16 plots. Because the chalk lies close to the surface, chardonnay dominates (95%), complemented by 5% pinot noir. The grapes are picked by hand.
Approach
On his arrival Michaël banned weedkillers; the soil is worked rather than chemically weeded. At the end of 2019 the estate was certified HVE and VDC, and all plots are farmed using biocontrol.
Champagnes
The cuvées bear names split by a slash: A/Justée (rosé), Élémen/taire, Ex/altée Brut, Im/plicite (Brut and Extra-Dry), Inter/stice Zéro Dosage, a Millésime 2011 and two editions of Éphé/mère. There is also the Dé/chêné ratafia.
