Champagne Marteaux Guillaume (also known as Champagne MG) is a Récoltant-Manipulant in Bonneil, in the Marne Valley (Aisne), run by Guillaume Marteaux since 2003. The estate is fifth generation and is known for its biodynamic and organic approach (Ecocert since 2022, Demeter since 2023).
History and Terroir
The origins lie with Marcel Marteaux, the grandfather, who as a nurseryman specialised in massal selection of vines. His son Joël and daughter-in-law Catherine switched from cooperative to independent production in 1996. Guillaume took over the estate in 2003, starting with 0.75 hectares, and expanded it to 8 hectares in Bonneil, Romeny-sur-Marne and Charly-sur-Marne. The terroir consists of chalky clay, marl and a unique sand vein, with a natural amphitheatre structure of 120 metres in height and south-eastern exposure.
Winemaking and Vinification
- Farming: In conversion since 2018, officially organic since the 2022 harvest and biodynamically certified since 2023. Natural ground cover and compost are used.
- Harvest: Exclusively by hand.
- Vinification: Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel or oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation for some cuvées.
- Ageing: Long ageing on dead yeast cells (lees) of 36 to 72 months.
- Reserves: Use of vintage reserves up to 20 years old for non-vintage cuvées.
- Dosage: Exclusively with grape sugar, low dosage between 0 and 3.5 g/l.
