Champagne Marizy Père et Fils is a Récoltant-Manipulant (grower champagne) in Cumières, a Premier Cru village in the Grande Vallée de la Marne, near Épernay. The house is known for its artisanal approach, HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and the takeover by the fourth generation, Lucas Marizy.

History

The Marizy family has a rich history in winegrowing going back to 1946, when Fernand Marizy began as a winegrower. He founded his own business in 1953 and only began selling champagne under his own name in 1970. His son Christian Marizy took over the reins in 1989. The estate is currently carried by Lucas Marizy, the fourth generation, while Christian has stepped back a little. The legal entity Champagne Marizy Père et Fils was officially registered on 1 May 2006 (SIREN: 490 194 321), although the family had been active decades earlier.

Vineyards and Terroir

The estate manages four hectares of vineyard, divided between Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The vineyards lie on steep, south-facing slopes directly behind the village of Cumières, at altitudes between 70 and 200 metres. This unique terroir, characterised by chalk-clay soils and chalk, provides perfect sunshine and makes the grapes ripen earlier than in other parts of the region. Marizy is a Récoltant-Manipulant, which means that they use 100% own grapes and no purchased grapes for industrial production.

Winemaking and Champagnes

Marizy follows a pure and honest artisanal process, certified according to the French HVE standard for sustainable viticulture. One of their best-known cuvées is the Brut Sélection, the accessible entry-level cuvée of the house. This champagne is a blend of 51% Chardonnay and 49% Pinot Noir and contains an exceptionally high proportion of reserve wines (48%), which provides consistency and depth. The wine ages for at least three years sur lie on the yeast.
