History: The champagne house Marcel Vézien is based in Celles-sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar region (Aube). The roots of the house go back to the end of the 19th century, when Armand Vézien planted his first vineyards. His grandson, Marcel Vézien, officially founded the house in 1956. Today the business is run by Jean-Pierre Vézien, the fourth generation of the family, who is known as Grand-Maître de la Commanderie du Saulte Bouchon Champenois.
Vineyards: The family holdings cover approximately 20 hectares of vineyards. The grape varieties are about 70% Pinot Noir, followed by 10% Pinot Meunier and 20% white varieties such as Chardonnay. In addition, rare and old varieties specific to this terroir are used, including Pinot Blanc, Arbane and Petit Meslier. The vineyards lie in an area with a semi-continental climate and chalky soils (Kimmeridgian).
Winemaking: Marcel Vézien practises raisonnée (balanced) viticulture and uses the traditional méthode champenoise. Vinification takes place in stainless steel cuves, while some cuvées are aged in oak barrels. The fermentation processes include alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Riddling (turning the bottles) is done both mechanically (gyropalette) and by hand on pupitres. Disgorgement is carried out using the ice-freezing method (the neck of the bottle is placed in a solution at -20°C).
Champagnes: The product line includes various cuvées with poetic names, such as Secret d'Éclairés (a Blanc de Blancs with a hint of Pinot Blanc), Terre d'Artistes (75% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay), Lumière de l'Aube, Nuit de Rubis, Celles que j'aime and Souvenir d'Ancêtre. Effervescence 56 is also produced in honour of the year of foundation. In addition to champagne, the house also offers Rosé des Riceys, Ratafia and Marc de Champagne. Visitors can visit the cellar and taste three to four cuvées.
