History: Champagne Mandois is a family house that has been active in Pierry for nineteen generations (according to the official site) or the ninth generation (according to other sources), with roots going back to 1735 when Jean Mandois became a winegrower. In 1867 Victor Mandois began vinification and sales, and in 1905 the house settled permanently in Pierry. The cellars were hewn in the 17th century beneath the local church, where brother Jean Oudart (a contemporary of Dom Pérignon) is also buried.
Vineyards: The estate manages its own vineyard of 37 hectares, spread over twelve prestigious municipalities including Pierry, Vertus and Chouilly. The soil is mainly chalky, typical of the Côte des Blancs and the Côtes d'Épernay. The grape varieties are 70% Chardonnay, supplemented with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Since 2017 the conversion to organic viticulture has been in full swing; 32 to 33 hectares is currently organically certified (Agriculture Biologique), making the estate one of the largest organic producers in the region.
Winemaking: Claude Mandois, the current leader, takes a minimalist approach with respect for the terroir. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve its specific characteristics. The house uses a diversity of fermentation vessels (stainless steel, enamel, wood, concrete) to optimise the aromatic profiles. Blending is a core value, with the house striving for consistency every year by blending between different years and terroirs. About 30% of the grapes needed are purchased from local growers with whom the house has long-term contracts.
Champagnes: The range is divided into three collections: Origine, Blanc de Blancs and Cuvée d'Exception.
- Origine: Everyday champagnes such as the Brut Origine (40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir) and Rosé Origine.
- Blanc de Blancs: Exclusively Chardonnay, such as the Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru from Pierry, Vertus and Chouilly.
- Cuvée d'Exception: High-quality cuvées such as the Mandois Victor (a prestigious Blanc de Blancs), Clos Mandois (a Blanc de Noirs of Pinot Meunier from a walled vineyard) and Brut Zéro (unsweetened).
