Champagne La Bar La Bonne is a winegrowing business since 1992, located at 12 Rue de la Fontaine-Denis in Barbonne-Fayel, and run by Virginie and David Verlet. The brand La-Bar-La-Bonne was officially launched in 2008 as a tribute to local history.
History and Name
The name of the village and of the champagne refers to the historical evolution from Bar sous Bois (a fortified village in the county of Champagne) to Bonne. This name change took place under the influence of Thibault IV of Champagne and the nearby Templars. The inhabitants built maladreries (hospitals for crusaders) to take in returning crusaders who had fallen ill in the East, which led to the name La Bar La Bonne.
Vineyards and Sustainability
The vineyards lie in the heart of the slopes of the Sézannais along the tourist Champagne route. The business follows a strictly sustainable approach:
- The vineyards are 100% permanently grassed (enherbement permanent).
- The business is certified under the High Environmental Value (Haute Valeur Environnementale - HVE) standards.
- The three classic champagne grape varieties are used: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
Winemaking and Offering
In addition to champagne production, Virginie and David Verlet also offer two self-contained guest rooms (chambres d'hôtes) for tourists. Visitors can visit the cellar by appointment, from Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 17:30.
Champagnes
The range includes various cuvées, including:
- Brut: A subtle blend of the year's wine and the perpetual wine, ideal as an aperitif.
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay from the Sézannais, with a lively freshness.
- Blanc de Noirs: An exclusive Old Vines (Vieille Vigne) cuvée of Pinot Meunier, known for its roundness.
- Brut Rosé: A blend of Pinot Noir (red) and wines of the previous year.
- Le Repère de Diogène: An exclusive, self-funded cuvée inspired by the Greek philosopher Diogenes, who lived in a barrel and strove for simplicity and harmony with nature.
