Champagne Jean Moutardier is a family business based in Le Breuil, in the Vallée du Surmelin (Marne valley), with roots going back to the 18th century. It is currently led by the fourth generation, brothers William and Simon Moutardier, who combine tradition with modern, sustainable techniques.
History and Structure
The Moutardier family is one of the oldest winegrowers in the region; as early as 1450 a member was mayor of Le Breuil. Jean Moutardier's father began producing his own champagne in 1920, after which Jean succeeded him in 1946 and bought neglected plots. The business is legally an SA à conseil d'administration (founded in 1987) and has 10 to 19 employees.
Vineyards and Grapes
The estate has 18 hectares of vineyard, located on south-east-facing, limestone slopes.
- 80% of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Meunier, the core of the house's identity.
- The remaining 20% consists of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
- The soil is argilo-calcaire, ideal for the expression of Meunier.
Winemaking and Sustainability
Jean Moutardier is known for a respectful, almost traditional approach to preserve the "soul" of the terroir.
- Soil care: The soil is ploughed without insecticides to restore its vitality.
- Certifications: The estate is certified with the HVE label (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne).
- Vinification: The wines are vinified in historic, vaulted cellars to promote natural development.
Champagnes
The focus is on original cuvées that emphasise the typicity of Meunier. Some well-known variants are:
- Carte d'Or: A blend of mainly Meunier (sometimes 85%) with Chardonnay; fresh, fruity and creamy.
- Pure Meunier: A 100% Pinot Meunier cuvée (also available as Brut Nature).
- Cuvée Rosée: Consisting of 80% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay; sensual, fresh with notes of strawberry and cherry.
- Alchimie Millésime: A vintage cuvée (e.g. 2014) that reflects the complexity of the year.
- Collection 1921: An Extra Brut that pays tribute to the historic legacy of the house.
