History The origin of the estate goes back to the end of the 19th century, when Alfred Copin and his wife began planting vineyards. The brand name Champagne Jacques Copin was officially launched in 1963, when Jacques Copin and his wife Anne-Marie took over the estate in Verneuil. The fourth generation, Bruno and Marielle, have taken over management since 1995, while their children Lucile and Mathieu have actively run the estate since 2013, continuing the family tradition.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate has more than 9 hectares (sometimes stated as 10 ha) of vineyards, spread over 34 plots in the Vallée de la Marne, around Verneuil, Vandières and Try-Dormans. The soil is argilo-calcaire with a southern exposure, ideal for the main cépages Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Pinot Meunier is the estate's favourite grape, accounting for about 70% of the plantings.
Winemaking Jacques Copin combines ancestral methods (such as vinification in oak barrels) with modern technology (temperature control, stainless steel cuves and microvinification). The vineyards are managed according to principles of sustainable farming, with an approach that varies between organic and conventional practices, depending on the year and the plots. The champagnes age on average three years in the cellars of Verneuil, while special series such as Polyphénols and Confidentielles remain on the lees for more than ten years.
Champagnes and Prices The range includes several highly rated cuvées:
- Cuvée Tradition: 90% Meunier, 10% Pinot Noir; known for freshness and fruity aromas (88/100).
- Cuvée Réserve: A balanced blend of Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (89/100).
- Blanc de Blancs: 100% Chardonnay from the plot 'La Goutte d'Or' (90/100).
- Polyphénols: A complex, long-aged cuvée (2006/2012) that scores 91-92/100.
- Millésime: Vintage champagnes such as 2007 and 2008, rated around 90/100.
The estate produces up to 77,000 bottles per year, of which 70% is sold in France (mainly to private customers) and the rest exported. Visitors can enjoy no-obligation tastings in the boutique at Rue de la Barre 23, 51700 Verneuil, without prior appointment.
