Champagne J. Charpentier is a family business based in Villers-sous-Châtillon (88 rue de Reuil), in the heart of the Vallée de la Marne, only 12 kilometres from Épernay. The brand name J. Charpentier was officially created in 1974 at the marriage of Jacky Charpentier and Claudine Claisse, who merged the two family vineyards, although the winegrowing tradition goes back to 1874 with Léonidas Charpentier.
- History: The family tradition begins in 1874 with Léonidas Charpentier. In 1974 the Charpentier and Claisse businesses merged under the name J. Charpentier. Since 2003 the estate has been run by Jean-Marc Charpentier, an oenologist, and since 2018 also by his sister Marie-Pierre.
- Vineyards: The estate manages 15 hectares of vineyard land, spread over 38 plots in nine communes, including Villers-sous-Châtillon, Reuil, Binson-Orquigny and Châtillon-sur-Marne. The vines are grown according to the principles of sustainable viticulture and are HVE-certified (Haute Valeur Environnementale).
- Grape varieties: The vineyard is dominated by red varieties, accounting for 80% of the area: Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. The remaining 20% is Chardonnay.
- Winemaking: The champagnes are known for their round and fresh flavour profile. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, foudres and oak barrels, with partial malolactic fermentation and a low sulphite content. Riddling (turning the bottles) is carried out partly by hand on pupitres, alongside automatic gyropalettes, and a moderate dosage is applied to emphasise the natural aromas.
- Champagnes: The flagship is Tradition Brut, composed of 80% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir, often enriched with reserve wines from wooden barrels. Other cuvées such as Passion (Blanc de Blancs) and Plaisir are also available. The cellar offers visits and tastings to the public.
