Champagne G.X. Crochet is a Récoltant-Manipulant (independent winegrower) based in Montmirail, in the Marne valley, founded in 2014 by the couple Gaëlle and Xavier Crochet. Xavier is the fifth generation of vignerons in his family, whose roots go back to before 1700 with the Italian Spement family.
History and Estate
The Crochet family has more than 300 years of winegrowing history, with roots in the Marne valley and the Côte des Blancs. Gaëlle and Xavier first worked on Xavier's family estate (Bergères-sous-Montmirail) before launching their own label. Their sales and reception venue is a 16th-century farmhouse in the hamlet of L'Échelle-le-Franc, which has been listed as a monument historique since 2003. The historic 16th-century wine cellar, with millstone columns, has been restored as a tasting room.
Vineyards and Wines
The estate manages about 10 hectares of vineyards spread over eight crus in different sub-regions of Champagne:
- Locations: Bergères-sous-Montmirail, Cramant, Oiry, Mareuil-le-Port, Troissy, and the Sézannais.
- Grape varieties: The champagnes are made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Production: The grapes are pressed and the wine is crafted by hand on the family estate, respecting the traditional champagne method. The house is known for the 2018 Lauréats Jeunes Talents distinction in 2018.
Cuvées
G.X. Crochet produces five main lines of champagne, characterised by freshness and elegance:
- Harmonie 3.8: A brut blend of the three main grape varieties from the eight crus, known for its fruity aromas (morello cherry, blackcurrant) and slight bitterness on the finish.
- Absolue de Blancs Grand Cru: A vintage (millésime) Blanc de Blancs from Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, partly vinified in oak barrels for extra complexity.
- Euphonie D.C.: A Solera cuvée, starting in 2014, which is a harmonious mix of terroirs from the Marne valley, Sézannais and Côte des Blancs, with notes of mirabelles and wild strawberries.
- Rosé de Saignée: A rosé from old Pinot Meunier vineyards in Bergères-sous-Montmirail.
- Grand Cru: A specific grand cru cuvée, often aimed at the pure expression of Chardonnay.
Visitors can taste and buy the champagnes on site in Montmirail.
