Champagne Geoffroy is an independent, family-run champagne house with a history going back to the 17th century in Cumières, Marne Valley. The house is known for its artisanal approach, deeply rooted in the terroir and aimed at the pure expression of grape varieties, in particular Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir.
History and Location
- Family heritage: The Geoffroy family has cultivated vineyards in Cumières for centuries. Roger Geoffroy began bottling his own wine in the 1950s, followed by his son René.
- Current management: Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy runs the house and in 2008 moved production and commercial activities from Cumières to Aÿ, a Grand Cru area.
- Continuation: The business is now carried by Jean-Baptiste and his five daughters, who continue the family traditions with a modern vision.
Vineyards and Terroir
- Area: The holdings consist of 14 hectares of vineyard, divided over 35 plots.
- Locations: The vineyards lie mainly in Cumières (Premier Cru), with additional plots in Hautvillers, Damery and Fleury-la-Rivière.
- Grape varieties: The plantings consist of about 42% Pinot Noir, 34% Pinot Meunier and 24% Chardonnay.
- Sustainability: The vineyards have been converting to organic farming since 2024. Integrated pest management, organic fertilisation and manual work are used to preserve the vitality of the soil.
Method and Vinification
- Fresh style: A characteristic choice is the avoidance of malolactic fermentation, which results in champagnes with a clear, natural freshness and acidity.
- Wooden barrels: Many wooden barrels (foudres and smaller casks) are used for vinification, which contributes to the complex aromas and texture.
- Technique: Production uses gravity for transport and traditional Coquard presses. The house produces about 110,000 bottles a year.
- Ageing: Many cuvées are designed for ageing and evolve gracefully in the bottle.
Distinctive Champagnes
- Expression Brut: The house style, an accessible Extra Brut (5 g/l dosage) with mineral notes and elegance.
- Empreinte: A Blanc de Noirs (mainly Pinot Noir from Cumières) with minimal dosage, characterised by red fruit notes and structure.
- Volupté: A Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) from Cumières, known for its finesse, pure minerality and tropical fruit notes.
- Rosé de Saignée: A powerful rosé of 100% Pinot Noir made by maceration, with intense red fruit aromas and a lively finish.
- Les Houtrants: A specific terroir champagne (often Blanc de Blancs or Complanté) with very limited production, made without wood, malo or filtration for maximum purity.
