Champagne Gaston Cheq is a cooperative based in Meurville (10200) in the heart of the Côte des Bar, founded in 1899 and known by the name of the winegrowers' leader Gaston Cheq. The organisation brings together 80 winegrowing families who work 180 hectares in twelve villages, with the range consisting mainly of Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%).
History and identity The cooperative Les Coteaux du Landion bears the name Gaston Cheq, an iconic figure of the 20th century who championed the Champagne appellation and the interests of the winegrowers in the Aube region. The brand name symbolises values such as solidarity, humanity and attachment to the Aubois terroir, while since 2018 the cooperative has had new facilities with panoramic views over the Landion valley for wine tourism.
Vineyards and method The winegrowers follow a reasoned (raisonnée) cultivation and production takes place with seven presses and modern vats for blending. The cooperative offers guided visits and tastings, in which visitors can follow the steps from pressing to cuves in a comfortable, sensory environment with large windows overlooking the vineyards.
Champagne range The range includes various style profiles, including:
- Brut: Based on the dominant Pinot Noir.
- Demi-Sec: Specially developed to go with desserts.
- Rosé Brut: A salmon-pink cuvée, ideal as an aperitif.
- Blanc de Blancs: 100% Chardonnay, with a bright golden colour.
- Millésimes: Including Cuvée Spéciale (e.g. 2017, 2019) and Blanc de Noirs (e.g. 2011, 2012) with Extra Brut dosage.
